Senior Payroll Specialist

LiveKitOperations

Job Description

About LiveKit

LiveKit is building the infrastructure layer for the voice-driven era of computing. Our platform gives developers everything they need to build, test, deploy, scale, and observe agents in production. Founded in 2021, LiveKit powers voice AI applications for OpenAI, xAI, Salesforce, Coursera, Spotify, and thousands of others, collectively facilitating billions of calls each year.

About You

LiveKit's team is growing fast, in the US and around the world, and Finance is taking over payroll. You'll be the person who makes it run: every employee, every state, every country, every filing.
Most senior payroll roles hand you a well-oiled machine and ask you not to break it. This one asks you to build it. You'll own US and international payroll, set up the calendar and controls, assist with month end close, and be the internal expert on anything that touches a paycheck.

You'll thrive as the Senior Payroll Specialist if you

  • are obsessive about tying out numbers to the penny
  • are known as the go-to person for tackling tough problems
  • work hard and can build and ship fast
  • are focused on polish, detail and quality
  • are a fast learner, frequently picking up new tips, tricks, and skills

The best way to impress us is with thoughtful ways you'd implement LiveKit, and potentially tinkering with it 😊

What You'll Do

As a Senior Payroll Specialist at LiveKit, you will

  • Run US and international payroll end to end, from collecting inputs to final reconciliation
  • Own all associated payroll tax filings, domestic and international, and keep us compliant and on time
  • Manage our PEO and EOR relationships, and know where their responsibility ends and yours begins
  • Reconcile payroll to the general ledger each cycle and support month-end close
  • Build and maintain our payroll calendar, processes, and documentation as payroll moves into Finance
  • Partner with People/Talent and accounting on new hires, changes, terminations, and month-end reconciliation
  • Support equity administration in Carta and equity reporting for the board
  • Be the go-to contact for payroll questions internally and for auditor requests externally

Who You Are

  • Hands-on experience running both US and international payroll, including Canada and/or the EU
  • Experience managing payroll tax filings directly, not just handing them off to a provider
  • Experience with multi-state US payroll for a remote, distributed team
  • Strong experience working within PEO and/or EOR structures
  • Familiarity with startup-focused platforms such as Rippling, Deel, Remote, or similar
  • Comfort working independently as the subject-matter expert, juggling many moving pieces and flagging tax, legal, and compliance risk before it becomes a problem

Nice to Have

  • CPP, FPC, or a similar payroll certification
  • Experience moving payroll in-house, switching providers, or migrating an HRIS
  • Experience with equity administration in Carta
  • Experience at a fast-growing company with a distributed, international team
  • You've personally caught a payroll error before anyone else did, and you still think about it fondly

Our Commitment to You

  • An opportunity to build something truly impactful to the world
  • Contribute to open source alongside world-class engineers
  • Competitive salary and equity package
  • Health, dental, and vision benefits
  • Flexible vacation policy

How to apply

The Apply button opens LiveKit's own application page in a new browser tab — applying is free, and this board never sits between you and the employer: no middleman, no form of ours to fill first.

This posting runs on Ashby, the applicant tracking system behind LiveKit's job board — the form you'll see lives at jobs.ashbyhq.com. It asks for the basics first: your name, email, and a résumé/CV upload. After that come the custom questions this employer wrote for the role — Ashby lets each team tailor its application, and some postings add a short questionnaire on top, so set aside a few quiet minutes rather than a thirty-second sprint. Because the questions change per role, re-read the requirements above before you start typing; answers that echo the exact skills the listing names are the ones that survive screening. Two practical notes: apply promptly while the posting is verified live, since teams close applications once a role fills, and use one email address for the application so your details stay under one identity.

Before you start

Tailor your résumé to the skills this listing names — employers screen for the requirements they wrote.
Have your work-authorization details ready — citizenship, visas, and right-to-work countries come up on remote applications.
Use the listed range ($132k to $178k) as your anchor in salary talk — the employer published it, so it is a fair opening number.

Salary context

The listed range of $132k to $178k a year sits about 15% below the board-wide median for Operations roles on this board.

That median is $151,000 to $214,000 a year, based on 111 live listings where the employer publishes an annual USD range — the same rules as the board's salary report.

The parsed benefits on this listing include Dental Insurance, Vision Insurance, Stock Options / Equity — equity is among them, so total compensation can extend beyond this base range.

Quick answers

Is this job still open?

Does it require experience?
The employer tags this role as senior level — the requirements above spell out what that means in practice.
Is the salary listed?
Yes — the employer publishes an annual range for this role: $132k to $178k.
