Wikimedia FoundationMobile Development

Job Description

Software Engineering Internship Program

Location: Remote (US)*

Duration: 4 months (start in late February 2027)

Hours: 40 hrs/week paid experience

Application Deadline: All interested applicants must apply by November 20, 2026.

The Wikimedia Foundation is the non-profit organization that operates Wikipedia – one of the most popular websites in the world, accessed by over 1.8 billion unique devices every month. It is the only non-profit in the top 50 websites, supported by a community of millions of individual donors around the world.

We are looking for graduates, non-graduates, or those seeking a career change who are interested in developing software engineering skills through an immersive “learn on the job” internship program. As an intern, you will be embedded into an engineering team within our Product and Technology departments and assigned a primary project with clear deliverables. Alongside your manager and dedicated mentor, you will learn the inner workings of our open source code that helps to create “a world in which everyone can freely share in the sum of all knowledge”.  You will work with software that serves over half a billion page views per day through Wikipedia (and other Wikimedia projects). The outcome of your work will impact how all people everywhere discover, share, and contribute to free knowledge.

Additionally, you will have the opportunity to learn about various departments at the Foundation and connect with the wider volunteer movement and community.

Applicants who identify from a group that is underrepresented in the global conversation of technology advancement are encouraged to apply. We’re also welcoming applicants from communities where access to free knowledge and Wikimedia projects are just emerging.

PROGRAM DETAILS

Successful candidates must be able to commit to a four month, 40hr/week internship which will fall between late February to late June 2027. We will provide laptops and necessary software installed for the duration of the program. This role is 100% remote, and in some cases there may be potential opportunities to participate in in-person events to meet other fellow interns and teams.

How to apply

The Apply button opens Wikimedia Foundation's own application page in a new browser tab — applying is free, and this board never sits between you and the employer: no middleman, no form of ours to fill first.

This posting runs on Greenhouse, the applicant tracking system behind many employers' careers pages — you'll apply on Wikimedia Foundation's job board at job-boards.greenhouse.io. Greenhouse follows a standard sequence: contact details, a résumé/CV upload, and the custom questions this employer added for the role. Work-authorization questions appear on most remote postings — where you are legally allowed to work — so have that answer ready before you start. Some postings add a cover-letter field; when it is optional, the listing's own requirements above tell you whether writing one would genuinely help. The final Submit button sits at the bottom of the employer's own page, and Greenhouse sends a confirmation email once your application is in — if it does not arrive within a few minutes, check the spam folder.

Before you start

Tailor your résumé to the skills this listing names — employers screen for the requirements they wrote.
Have your work-authorization details ready — citizenship, visas, and right-to-work countries come up on remote applications.
Use the listed range ($71k to $88k) as your anchor in salary talk — the employer published it, so it is a fair opening number.

Salary context

The listed range of $71k to $88k a year sits about 56% below the board-wide median for Mobile Development roles on this board.

That median is $160,000 to $201,500 a year, based on 18 live listings where the employer publishes an annual USD range — the same rules as the board's salary report.

The parsed benefits on this listing include Vision Insurance and Stock Options / Equity, so total compensation can extend beyond this base range.

Quick answers

Is this job still open?
Yes. Listings on this board are re-verified 4 times a day and auto-expire 45 days after posting — if this page is visible, the role was open at the last check.
Where does the Apply button go?
Straight to Wikimedia Foundation's own application page — never a middleman. Every listing here comes from the employer's own job board, so the Apply button simply opens their page in a new tab.
Does it require experience?
The employer tags this role as entry level — the requirements above spell out what that means in practice.
Is the salary listed?
Yes — the employer publishes an annual range for this role: $71k to $88k.
