Job Description
Role Summary
We’re seeking an IT Systems Engineer to join our growing IT team. You’ll own the architecture and automation behind the systems our employees rely on every day: identity, device management, endpoint security, and the tooling that ties them together. You’ll work closely with IT, Security, Engineering, and People teams to design, build, and scale the platforms that keep a fast-growing company productive and secure. You’ll also be the onsite IT presence in San Francisco, supporting our executive team and running the technology in our new office. You’ll be expected to set technical direction within your domain, lead multi-team initiatives, and make sound decisions without close supervision.
This role is based in San Francisco, with regular onsite presence at our new San Francisco office, which you’ll manage day to day.
What You’ll Do
- Own and deploy the architecture, reliability, and roadmap for core IT platforms (identity and access, device management, endpoint security, or IT automation)
- Design and build automation and internal tooling that eliminates manual work: onboarding and offboarding workflows, access lifecycle management, device enrollment and posture enforcement, and self-service for employees. Use AI and LLM-based tools (such as AI agents and MCP integrations) where they make IT work faster, more consistent, and more reliable
- Lead multi-team technical initiatives end to end, from architecture and design docs through rollout and communication, partnering with Security, Engineering, and People teams
- Set technical standards and patterns for the IT team, and write clear design documentation and runbooks others can build on
- Evaluate tools and vendors, weigh build-vs-buy tradeoffs, and make recommendations to IT leadership with clear reasoning on cost, risk, and scale
- Partner with Security to implement and maintain the technical controls behind our security and compliance requirements
- Serve as the technical escalation point for the hardest problems, and apply lessons from incidents to fix root causes rather than symptoms
- Mentor IT Support Specialists and raise the team’s technical bar
- Own technology for our San Francisco office end to end, including network and internet connectivity, Wi-Fi, A/V, and equipment, and coordinate with ISPs and vendors
- Design, deploy, and support network-connected video conferencing and meeting room systems (for example Zoom Rooms, Neat, and Cisco Meraki networking), and make sure every meeting space works reliably for in-person and remote participants
- Provide white-glove support to executives: proactive and responsive with a high bar for reliability before and during important meetings and events
- Occasional travel to company events and other Temporal locations
What You’ll Bring
- 8+ years of experience in IT, systems engineering, or a similar role, with a track record of owning platforms rather than only operating them
- Deep expertise in at least one of: identity and access management (Okta, Entra ID), device management (MDM for macOS and Windows), or endpoint security and zero trust tooling
- Strong scripting and automation skills (for example Python, TypeScript, Bash, or PowerShell), including working with APIs and integrating SaaS systems, and hands-on experience using AI coding assistants and LLM-based tools to build and ship automation faster
- Experience leading cross-functional projects to completion, including scoping, stakeholder alignment, and rollout
- Ability to communicate technical tradeoffs clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences, including executives
- Hands-on experience with enterprise networking (switching, Wi-Fi, firewalls, ISP circuits) and with conference room and video conferencing systems
- Comfort supporting senior executives: polished, discreet, and calm under pressure, with the ability to build trust quickly
- A bias to action and a history of self-education
Nice to Have
- Experience with identity governance and access lifecycle automation (for example Okta Identity Governance, group rules, access certifications)
- Experience with zero trust networking (for example Cloudflare Zero Trust) and endpoint detection and response tooling
- Infrastructure-as-code experience (for example Terraform) applied to IT systems
- Experience building AI-powered workflows or agents for IT operations (for example MCP servers, or LLM-driven ticket triage and onboarding automation)
- Experience supporting security and compliance programs from the IT side
- Experience at a fast-growing, remote-first company, or one that serves developers
- Experience standing up or opening a new office, including vendor and circuit coordination

How to apply
The Apply button opens Temporal's own application page in a new browser tab — applying is free, and this board never sits between you and the employer: no middleman, no form of ours to fill first.
This posting runs on Ashby, the applicant tracking system behind Temporal's job board — the form you'll see lives at jobs.ashbyhq.com. It asks for the basics first: your name, email, and a résumé/CV upload. After that come the custom questions this employer wrote for the role — Ashby lets each team tailor its application, and some postings add a short questionnaire on top, so set aside a few quiet minutes rather than a thirty-second sprint. Because the questions change per role, re-read the requirements above before you start typing; answers that echo the exact skills the listing names are the ones that survive screening. Two practical notes: apply promptly while the posting is verified live, since teams close applications once a role fills, and use one email address for the application so your details stay under one identity.
